New CDC Director Dr. Erica Schwartz Takes Over

Dr. Erica Schwartz was confirmed Wednesday as new head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The U.S. Senate voted 51-44 to confirm Schwartz as director of the nation's premier public health agency, ending a roughly year-long search for stability at the CDC. The vote was largely split along party lines, with most Democrats in opposition.

Schwartz will oversee the nation’s public health response, vaccine recommendations and outbreak containment — a tall order at this point in history.

Schwartz, a former Navy physician and chief medical officer in the Coast Guard who previously served as deputy surgeon general, steps into the role after a turbulent period for the CDC, reports NBC News. Several acting directors had led the agency since last August, when Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed Susan Monarez after less than a month at the helm.

As Schwartz assumes leadership, she inherits a number of active public health crises. The United States faces a resurgence of measles — the most cases in the past 35 years — and a growing outbreak of parasitic infections linked to contaminated produce.

She must also address growing public skepticism around routine immunization, a trend that critics tie to recent federal policy changes and Kennedy’s anti-vaccine rhetoric.

While Schwartz is widely regarded as a conventional choice for the post, her nomination faced scrutiny during confirmation hearings. Several public health experts and lawmakers questioned whether she would firmly resist political interference from HHS, particularly regarding established science on vaccine safety, according to NBC News.

Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, a physician and Republican chairman of the Senate health committee, voiced concerns at last month’s hearings about Schwartz’s hesitation to address contentious policies. 

“We need a CDC director that will actually stand up to crazy, stupid things being said that undermine faith in immunization,” he said. However, Cassidy supported her confirmation, pointing to assurances from her former colleagues and changes to CDC messaging on its website.

Supporters say Schwartz is ready to navigate political pressures while upholding rigorous scientific standards. During her committee testimony, Schwartz emphasized her dedication to research evidence and public trust.

“As CDC director, my sacred responsibility is to provide the American people with public health guidance that is clear, honest and evidence-based,” Schwartz said. “I will never betray the science.”

A coalition of former CDC employees remained skeptical, however, arguing that her testimony lacked sufficient guarantees of independence, reports NBC News. 

In response, Emily Hilliard, an HHS spokesperson, said Schwartz’s professional background and service record demonstrate her competence.

“Claiming that Dr. Schwartz was evasive because she declined to speculate on policy decisions outside the scope of her nomination is simply political theater,” Hilliard told NBC News.
